Newman Furniture Company began in 1948 when E. B. Newman, Sr. decided to buy a truck and a warehouse and begin a furniture service. In 1948 there was no store or showroom you could just walk into -- the trucks loaded up furniture at the warehouse every morning and rode from home to home offering a selection of different goods.
In the years to come the furniture industry - and the Newman’s operation - began to grow and change. Ben eventually bought a building in downtown Camden and began to offer a wide selection of furniture, appliances, and bedding as well as many other goods. Ben believed that good business was done with a firm handshake and a person's word. He ran his store on the principle that if you treat others the way you would like to be treated then you will be successful. This philosophy has been foundational to the success of Newman’s Furniture and still continues to work to this day. Ben grew the Newman Furniture Company into two separate two-story buildings and a two-story warehouse downtown.
In 1995 E. B. Newman passed the torch to his son Ken Newman, a Finance and Economics degree holder from Clemson University. Since then Newman’s has continued to grow, with two locations currently: one a showroom opened in Dusty Bend in 2010 (and run by Ken Newman) and the other a showroom opened in Elgin in 2002 (run by Richard Ham). Even as the Newman’s brand grows, our commitment to the core tenets of E. B. Newman’s business model still hold true: treating customers the way we would want to be treated.
